Paris is the capital and most populous city of France, with an estimated population of 2,165,423 in 2019 spread over an area of more than 105 km², making it the 30th most densely populated city in the world in 2020. Since the 17th century, Paris has been a major center for finance, diplomacy, commerce, fashion, gastronomy, and science. Known for its significant role in the arts and sciences and its early adoption of street lighting, it earned the nickname "The City of Light" in the 19th century. Before World War II, it was sometimes referred to as the capital of the world, similar to London.
Paris is a major hub for railway, highway, and air transport, served by two international airports: Paris–Charles de Gaulle and Paris–Orly. Opened in 1900, the Paris Metro serves 5.23 million passengers daily, making it the second-busiest metro system in Europe after the Moscow Metro. Gare du Nord, with 262 million passengers in 2015, is the 24th-busiest railway station in the world and the busiest outside Japan. The city is renowned for its museums and architectural landmarks. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Louvre received 2.8 million visitors in 2021. Other notable museums include the Musée d'Orsay, Musée Marmottan Monet, Musée de l'Orangerie, the Pompidou Centre Musée National d'Art Moderne, Musée Rodin, and Musée Picasso. The historical district along the Seine in the city center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, featuring landmarks like the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, Sainte-Chapelle, the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Palais, the Petit Palais, the Arc de Triomphe, and the hill of Montmartre with its Basilica of Sacré-Coeur.
Paris hosts several United Nations organizations, including UNESCO, and other international bodies like the OECD, the OECD Development Centre, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, the International Energy Agency, the International Federation for Human Rights, and European bodies such as the European Space Agency, the European Banking Authority, and the European Securities and Markets Authority.
The city is home to the football club Paris Saint-Germain and the rugby union club Stade Français. The 80,000-seat Stade de France, built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, is located just north of Paris in Saint-Denis. Paris will host the 2024 Summer Olympics and has previously hosted the Olympic Games in 1900 and 1924. It has also hosted the 1938 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, the 2007 Rugby World Cup, the annual French Open Grand Slam tennis tournament at Roland Garros, and the UEFA European Championships in 1960, 1984, and 2016. Every July, the Tour de France bicycle race concludes on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées.
