The medical specialty that deals with the treatment of illnesses and injuries that require urgent medical treatment is called emergency medicine. Emergency physicians treat unexpected and undifferentiated patients of any age. Their main responsibilities are to initiate resuscitation and stabilization, and to perform tests and procedures to diagnose and treat illnesses in the acute phase.
Generally, emergency physicians work in prehospital facilities such as hospital emergency departments, emergency medical services, and intensive care units, but also in primary care facilities such as urgent care clinics.
