Immune-disorders

Malfunctions of the immune system are called immune disorders. These disorders can be characterized in a variety of ways.

  • By the component(s) of the immune system affected
  • By whether the immune system is overactive or underactive
  • By whether the condition is congenital or acquired

The International Federation of Immunological Societies has determined that there are more than 150 primary immunodeficiency disorders (PIDs). However, the number of acquired immunodeficiency disorders exceeds the number of PIDs, suggesting that most people have at least one primary immunodeficiency disorder due to immune system overlap.
