Barcelona is a city on the northeastern coast of Spain. It is the capital and largest city of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia and the second most populous municipality in Spain. The city has a population of 1.6 million, and its metropolitan area extends into many neighbouring municipalities in the province of Barcelona, ??with around 4.8 million people living there. This makes it the fifth most populous metropolitan area in the European Union, after Paris, the Ruhr Region, Madrid and Milan. It is one of the largest metropolises in the Mediterranean, located on the coast between the mouths of the Llobregat and Besòs rivers, and bordered to the west by the Collserola mountain range, whose highest peak is 512 metres (1,680 feet) above sea level.

Tourist attractions: With 5.5 million international visitors in 2011, Barcelona was the 20th most visited city in the world and the fifth most visited city in Europe after London, Paris, Istanbul and Rome. In 2015, both Prague and Milan saw an increase in international visitors. Barcelona, ??with its Ramblas, is the most popular city in Spain. Barcelona is an internationally renowned tourist destination with numerous recreational areas, some of the best beaches in the world, a warm and mild climate, historical monuments including 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 519 hotels (as of March 2016) of which 35 are 5-star hotels, and a well-developed tourist infrastructure.

Climate: Due to its high population density, Barcelona is strongly affected by the urban heat island effect. Outside the city center, the temperature difference can be up to 2 °C throughout the year. The annual average temperature is 21.2 °C (70.2 °F) during the day and 15.1 °C (59.2 °F) at night. The average annual sea temperature is about 20 °C (68 °F).
